Tap your heels and say, "There's No Place Like Home!" After a year-long campaign and months of preparation, the time arrived for the "60th Anniversary Gala and Dance: There's No Place Like Home." More than 300 guests visited our magical land of Oz on Friday, October 16, 2009 to help Philadelphia Senior Center (PSC) celebrate 60 years of service to tens of thousands of seniors and their families. This Wizard of Oz-inspired event took place at Penn's Landing Caterers/ Sheet Metal Workers Local Union Building.
The evening started with a VIP reception that included a top shelf open bar, lavish hors d'oeuvres, and performance by the Greater Overbrook String Band. Dinner seating included dinner, dancing and dessert, along with an original musical performance by PSC's jazz pianist Tom Lawton. CBS 3/ The CW Philly 57 Anchor/Reporter Natasha Brown served as the media chairperson for the event.
PSC presented the "60th Anniversary Gala" in its own special land of "Oz" in a Philadelphia-inspired Emerald City, complete with an emerald-green Liberty Bell and Love Statue. The VIP Reception took place in the Haunted Forest, complete with a tin man.
Highlights of the program included a digital story presentation, "60 Years of Stories." Jazz pianist and PSC composer-in-residence Tom Lawton presented original music he created with input from PSC seniors. There will also a live dance band to help guests kick-up their ruby red slippers!
The program concluded with an awards presentation by CBS 3/ The CW Philly 57 Anchor/Reporter Natasha Brown. Brown presented three awards to leaders and organizations who helped PSC reach this special milestone: Anne B. Hagele (Visionary Award), The Female Society for the Relief and Employment of the Poor ( Founder's Award), and the friends, volunteers and donors of the Coffee Cup House Party (Sustainer's Award).
