A pretty pink cupcake shop opened in town – in the most unlikely of places. In the heart of South Philly, amongst the cheese steaks, canollis and soft pretzels, Ms Goody Cupcake has made its bright and shiny debut as the neighborhoods ONLY cupcakery. Good for my sweet tooth, bad for my trainer!
Gigi Andrew, who will be forever known as “Ms Goody,” opened her shop at 1838 E. Passyunk Ave. in late 2011. Since then, she has already baked thousands of cupcakes and other sweet treats. Each day she offers 12 (!!) different flavors of cupcakes, ranging from traditional (red velvet, vanilla, chocolate), to flavorful (Elvis-inspired banana and bacon, honeycomb), to Philly-inspired (beer and soft pretzel), to the truly wild (chocolate covered potato chip, French toast with a side of bacon).
While the shop’s main focus is cupcakes, Gigi also specializes in custom designer cakes. Gigi has made over 500 custom decorated cakes at the shop and out of her home. She specializes in themed-cakes, which have ranged from one layer small cakes, to over-the-top life-sized creations. In addition to cakes and cupcakes, Gigi is making seasonal pies, cake truffles and cookies. She enjoys putting a personal twist on classic treats, like her PB&J rice crispy treats.
Looking ahead, Gigi has big things planned for 2012. She will debut at the East Passyunk Avenue Flavors of the Avenue in April. She will also make a major expansion announcement in late March. First up, however, is a trip to Philly’s new Hawaii with a line of cupcakes inspired and benefiting the 2012 Philadelphia Flower Show. Between Saturday, March 3 and Saturday March 10, Ms Goody will debut new flavors that pay homage to the islands by using traditional ingredients, such as coconuts, bananas, pineapples and macadamia nuts. A new flavor and theme will debut each day, including:
• Island Breeze – Banana and pineapple cake, lemon curd filling, lemon cream cheese frosting
• Shake Your Coconuts – Coconut cake, coconut buttercream, topped with toasted coconut
• Surfs Up – Blue Hawaiian cake, ocean blue buttercream, surfboard
• Volcano – Chocolate raspberry cake, chocolate buttercream, with raspberry lava
• Dream Vacation – Pineapple cake, vanilla butter cream, topped with coconut
• Piña Colada – Piña Colada cake soaked in rum, coconut cream cheese frosting, topped with cherry
Twenty-five cents from the sale of each Hawaii-inspired cupcake, including advance orders, will be donated to the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Talk about sweet!
